Description
Damiana is a pungent herb with a fig like flavor. It is native to Mexico and Central America where it is revered as a national treasure and was used by the Mayans. Although its effect on sexual desire was its primary use across cultures, it was also valued as a nerve relaxant, digestive stimulant, mood enhancer, and simply an enjoyable beverage that was given to children. Damiana's medicinal properties serve to uplift the spirit, improve digestion, relax the nervous system and to stimulate menstrual flow.
Historically damiana has been used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and mild depression, especially if these symptoms have a sexual component. The herb is also used as a general tonic to improve wellness.
Damiana has been used to improve digestion and to treat constipation, as in larger doses it is thought to have a mild laxative effect.
It is well known in southwestern cultures as a sexuality tonic and is recommended by many top herbalists. It stimulates the intestinal tract and brings oxygen to the genital area. It also increases energy levels which does a lot to restore libido and desire. In women, Damiana often restores the ability to achieve orgasm. Damiana is used primarily as an energy tonic and an aphrodisiac for both men and women.
Damiana is also useful in weaning smokers off tobacco. When taken as a tea it is a tonic for the kidneys, sexual organs, and the nervous system. It is excellent at balancing hormones and emotions.
