Camphor essential oil comes from the wood of the camphor laurel and is native to Borneo & Taiwan. Camphor is also the official tree of Hiroshima, Japan. Camphor is most notably used in over the counter salves and chest rubs. These products are usually petroleum based and are chemically manufactured from turpentine oil.

Camphor oil is an analgesic which means it is a pain reliever and can be used topically for aches, pains, muscle cramps and spasms, and arthritis. Its anti-inflammatory property also makes it an excellent choice for pain relief as well as burns and bruising. The cooling effect camphor has on the skin is caused by the blocking of the skins sensory nerves which reduces the feeling of pain.

Camphor is also highly anti-fungal and anti- bacterial. It kills fungi as wells as inhibits its growth. This oil has been used as a treatment for acne and cold sores for this reason.

Another use for camphor essential oil is respiratory function as it clears congestion exceptionally well.

*Camphor can be dangerous and toxic in large doses. Those who have asthma, epilepsy, children, and women who are pregnant or nursing should not use camphor.
